How has wedding décor changed over the last 5 years?
Modern brides would like their personality to reflect more and more in their wedding décor. Instead of just replicating looks from Pinterest they now want to add that something special that enables guests to see a little bit of themselves in the decoration of their big day. This often means that brides are more involved in DIY’ing certain elements of their weddings. This isn’t necessarily as a means to save money but to add an element that they’ve handcrafted or carefully thought out. This results in designers working together with the bride to create something really different and unique for each wedding.

Another element that’s changed over the years is that ostentatious high flower arrangements are often replaced by single blooms in a collection of different vases to give a dramatic effect. Often a single stem styled in a clever way can be more dramatic than voluminous styles.

Nowadays there are so many resources available to brides, through social media platforms. What’s great about this is that brides are able to research and plan well and know exactly what they want. Often when they arrive for a consultation they have a vision board that shows you exactly which way to go. This empowers brides so much more and gives them the confidence to try more unusual designs.

Where do you draw your décor inspiration from?
I love everything glam and modern. From ostentatious to decadently simple. I love researching international work and trends but there’s no designer in particular that I follow. A lot of inspiration I get is from bride’s themselves – I love to listen to their ideas and create something unique for their special day.

How does South African wedding fair with décor overseas?
South Africa has very talented designers and our weddings are definitely on par with the rest of the world. I think that the top décor companies can compete well with the rest of the world and that they showcase their talent everyday. I am proud to be part of the South African wedding industry.

What is the most memorable wedding you have decorated?
My most memorable wedding was that of Angelique and Manny at Summer Place in 2014. The entire wedding drew on inspiration from the King Protea and we used an abundance of flowers, all in shades of creams, peach and blush. Proteas signify daring courage, transformation and resourcefulness as they are among the oldest families of flowers on earth, dating back 300 million years. The centre flower is the largest in its genus.  Long banquet tables were dressed with an extensive collection of silver and glass, overflowing with posies and arrangements all enhanced with LED lighting, and further highlighted by pin spots shining onto the flowers in the venue. The bridal table had flowers cascading down on four levels from table height down to the stage and onto the floor. What made this wedding my most memorable was that it was the one that challenged me the most, and had the most detail and required the most planning. These are the weddings that I thrive on and when the bride gives you her approval just before walking down the aisle, the satisfaction and sense of pride that you experience makes everything worthwhile.

How important is décor to the overall wedding?
Décor is incredibly important to a wedding. This is the day when you are the princess and you deserve to be in your wonderland. You deserve to surrounded and captured in beauty. This is where you can display your individual style and character. It’s one of the most important celebrations of your life. Your décor creation is what is captured in your photographs and that you can share with your grandchildren in years to come. Décor creates the first impression for your guests. It’s the one time when you have the freedom to create and host an event that’s unique to you and share your creativity with the ones that care for you most.

Most popular décor trends / colours?
Blush seems to be the most popular colour request recently. Combined with whites and creams on bold fabrics, I am sure that we will see blush weddings for some time. Gold has quickly become really popular as well. Gone are the days when brides keep silver as the base of their wedding. Gold, glass and crystal are very impressive and can create the most amazing creations.

Classic top arrangements with lots of flowers will always be popular but brides are now more comfortable with lots of foliage and greens. Seasonal flowers grouped into freshly picked looks as if gathered from a meadow are also popular. Long runners of flowers with foliage across the length of rectangular tables have also become a trend.

A huge trend now is using white high gloss tables and glass tables instead of conventional tables with cloths. Although these add to the overall décor budget they offer a look that simply cannot be created with conventional tables.

Lighting has become more and more important. From beneath the table, within the arrangements and from above. And ambient lighting around a room creates a most spectacular atmosphere in the venue. Lighting monograms of the couple’s initials are also popular.
