{News} 10 ideas we never saw coming
Here are 10 new takes on traditions that prove weddings can (and should) be done differently…
1. Wedding dresses that are anything but white
It’s not to say that white dresses are out – they’re just not the only option. More women than ever are reinventing what it means to look like a bride, wearing anything from a 70s-inspired column dress or crop top number to a blush mermaid-style gown.
2. “We’re not taking our wedding too seriously” colour palettes
While we love a timeless blush and ivory palette, colour – as in lots and lots of vibrant hues – is more than okay too. From funky hanging pennants to DIY altar decorations, weddings have never looked brighter.
3. Unexpected venues, decor and more
We’re going to guess that your grandparents didn’t get married in a barn, your parents probably didn’t use an Airstream as a backdrop for their cake, and it didn’t dawn on anyone older than you to use a typewriter in lieu of a traditional guest book.
4. Next level dancing
Step aside chicken dance and electric slide – flash mobs and other choreographed party dances have practically reinvented receptions. Think surprise performances, synchronised wedding party cheers (complete with back flips) and outrageous mom-and-son dances.
5. Fashion-forward grooms and groomsmen
These days, brides aren’t the only ones focused on making their wardrobe memorable. That’s right – the men are also getting in on the fashion fun, donning boldly coloured or patterned dress socks, bow ties, pocket squares and suspenders – not to mention out-of-the-box suits.
6. Let them eat cake… Or not!
Sure, tiered cakes are still a thing, but so are upside-down cakes, naked cakes, pie towers, doughnut displays and even Belgian waffle bars.
7. Souped-up cocktail hours and bars
At today’s weddings even the cocktails are styled. Our favourite creative bar set ups: whiskey tasting tables and create-your-own champagne cocktails.
8. Weddings gone mobile (and social!)
There are some fabulous wedding apps out there to help you find your perfect dress, venue and other details to share with brides-to-be just like you. Some suggestions: AppyEverAfter, Wedding Plan-It, Bride’s Wedding Genius 2.0
9. Gaming upgrades
Photo booths were just the beginning of the extra entertainment trend. Cocktail hours are now filled with activities reminiscent of your childhood, like lawn games, wedding day bingo and giant Jenga sets.
10. Out-of-the-box bridesmaid dresses
Bridesmaid dresses don’t have to match the tablecloths – they don’t even have to be dresses anymore! Nowadays, bridesmaids walk down the aisle in an array of cool and unconventional outfits, including electric or jewel tone coloured jumpsuits and colour-blocked shift dresses.
