{Real Wedding} Terisha and Sheraz
Terisha and Sheraz met in 2005 while they were both still studying. According to Sheraz, he had had his eye on Terisha for a while before plucking up the courage (with the assistance of six cups of coffee) to approach her. A chance meeting turned into three hours of conversation and the rest, as they say, is history.
Sheraz proposed during a weekend trip to the coast to celebrate Terisha’s 21st. “I decided to make it a double celebration and ask Terisha to marry me,” he says. The pair had been on a morning stroll on the beach when Terisha discovered a ‘message in a bottle’ that Sheraz had left for her. At that moment, with a school of dolphins in full view, Sheraz got on one knee and proposed. This adventure ended with a surprise champagne breakfast on the beach.
The couple are both from Durban so it was a given that their wedding would take place in the coastal city. The wedding was a traditional Hindu three-day affair, beginning with Terisha’s mhendi ceremony followed by hurdee, a cleansing ritual for both the bride and groom.
Traditionally, the wedding ceremony is held under a canopy called the mandap; the couple, however, opted for a more modern approach, choosing décor features that reflected both their personal tastes. The theme of the wedding was a combination of crystal and water.
The highlight for both Terisha and Sheraz were the rituals they undertook during the ceremony. For the bride, the moment when Sheraz applied the sindoor to her hair was significant. “It was special because it symbolised that I was now a married woman. For the groom the saptapardi (the seven steps) was the best part: “It solidified our bond to each other and the promises we made to each other for our marriage.”
The ceremony was followed by a Hollywood-style reception with plenty of glamour. The couple’s first dance was a mixture of the foxtrot and rumba done to the James Ingram hit ‘Baby, Come to Me’. As with the ceremony, the reception was once again a reflection of their personalities, traditions, creativity and their love for ‘glitz and glam’.
