{Real Wedding} Tumi & Roger
Where and how did you meet? Love at first sight…Well certainly for Roger. Adamant that I call him, I was totally unaware of all his advances when I took my car in for a service. It wasn’t until five minutes later that he rung me up and a conversation struck, which would lead us down the aisle six years later. There was a two year break between but, once we reconnected, we just knew it was meant to be.
How did he propose? So, I’m not one for surprises. At all. We had discussed marriage before and when Roger was ready to pop the question, on a random Saturday night while watching the crime channel (Wives With Knives), we discussed it in great detail and the following week he sent my dad an email and I went ring shopping. No surprises but I was very happy.
Please tell us shortly about your wedding day. Roger and I had just opened our own wedding planning business but we obviously wanted someone else to deal with all of our suppliers on the day so that we could enjoy our traditional wedding. We had also asked my folks to be in charge of all cultural and traditional aspects of the traditional wedding, out of respect for them too. They were incredibly accommodating and wanted not just the Sepedi side to be adorned but for an array of cultures at the wedding to be celebrated – so they opted for letting guests come in their own traditional attire – from saris and kilts to ibheshu and xibelani. We all decided we wanted our guests to celebrate and feel comfortable and sing and dance with us – the one way we could accomplish this was by using bright colours that extended to our table décor and certainly the retinue’s attire. Pink, green, yellow, blue, red and white. The amazing duo that is Tshepo and Neo from T & N Classy Creations handled all the logistics and made sure we were satisfied with every last detail. They took over the catering and it was delicious, they took over the bar and the drinks flowed, the took over the music and there were happy feet everywhere, they took over the décor and really listened to our brief to make sure that the tables weren’t too busy or cluttered but still spoke of vibrant African elements. Even our outfits were sorted by them – not a thing out of place.
If you could change one thing about your wedding day what would it be? The stress leading up to the event. There really was no need – we had fantastic, professional and reliable suppliers who did what they were required to.
What was the highlight of your day? Seeing so many friends and family come together for us. From the UK, from India and all over South Africa, we were honoured to have them at our side. Although, I think for Roger it was when I had to observe Sepedi practices. He enjoyed that. Immensely.
How did it feel to finally stand next to each as husband and wife? Emotional. It had been quite a journey to get us there and we were both overcome with emotion. So there were plenty tears of joy.
Where did you go on honeymoon? Two weeks after the traditional wedding we had our western wedding and then jetted off to Cape Town where we had both been, but never together, and it was spectacular. Wine routes, beaches, luxury spa days, private chef and lots of love. We had the perfect time to relax and enjoy each other while reflecting on the most authentic wedding experience we had had.
What advice would you give to a soon-to-be bride? Get the right suppliers and you won’t have to stress about anything. Don’t under estimate the value of wedding planners.
