The Sunbird forms part of the Battlefields Route and Route 66 Zululand Heritage Route. Situated near Gingindlovu, meaning ‘Swallower of the Elephant’ in Zulu, by Cetshwayo when he won the struggle with his brother Mbulazi over the Zulu throne. Close to the site of the 1879 battle between the British forces and Cetshwayo’s army, who besieged the town of Eshowe.

There are numerous parks and nature reserves in the area – including the Siyaya Coastal Park, the Umlalazi Nature Reserve, and the Amatikulu Nature Reserve all dedicated to conservation.

The two beautiful, indigenous forests of Dlinza and Ntumeni are within easy reach and both are renowned for their bird and plant life. The Sunbird is also en-route of the Zululand Birding Route, with over 650 species of birds, offering an incredible diversity of bird species.
