{Beauty} Wedding hair trends from a celeb stylist!

Celebrity stylists Nthato Mashishi has worked with some of the hottest South African celebs like Bonang Matheba, Lira and every ‘It Girl’ out there. Last year we were lucky enough to feature him Nubian Bride and he gave us expert advice on the hottest bridal hair looks,  and because he is so good at what he does, he also gave some tips on the right dress, make-up and jewellery to go with the look.

Crowning glory
Hair celebrity: Mary J Blige

Another big look is that of the maxi ballerina bun on the top of the head. As seen on Beyoncé, this look boasts loads of volume and serves as a crown on the top of the head. For this dramatic style, extensions will be needed and the hair needs to look healthy, sleek and shiny.

Wedding style: The maxi bun will work best when paired with a strapless mermaid style dress, as the silhouette will create some curves in all the right places. Pair the hair and dress with some dangly earrings and some bold lashes and you are good to go.

Spanish flair
Hair celebrity: Kim Kardashian
For a more romantic look, Nthato suggests the Spanish bun, a loose knot tied at the base of the neck. The look is nicely complimented with a floral accented hairpiece, headband, braid or ribbon. To add lustrous shine to dull hair whilst controlling frizz try an oil spray.”

Wedding style: The dress? It should be A-line style gown with an asymmetrical strap over the one shoulder. As seen on Kim Kardashian, the look is soft and romantic with an imperial feel to it. A make-up palette of gold’s and coppers will create a gentle glow to this goddess inspired look. Add a teardrop earring to finish the look off.

Bee retro
Hair celebrity: Jennifer Lopez
Retro is big and it’s back and in honour of the late Amy Winehouse, we are taking a trip down memory lane to when the fabulous beehive created a buzz. A hairspray is essential in upholding this do, but brides need to take caution not to make hair look sticky and grubby. Nthato recommends finishing a conditioning spray with almond oil.

Wedding style: The beehive hairstyle can be worn with two dress types. Firstly, it can be worn with an elongated evening dress that is either a halter neck or has fine spaghetti straps. The dress needs to be rich in detail with an abundance of beads and sequins and will be nicely balanced with chandelier earrings. Secondly, a strapless ball gown will also nicely compliment the beehive. Note, however that the ball gown should not be excessively plumpy or “poofy” as it needs to evoke a classic feel. Layers of lace and some oversized clip-on earrings will be statement pieces.  Soft make up with a bold lip will finish off the look.

Less is more
Hair celebrity: Lira
Not all brides want to go over the top – some just want to keep it simple and timeless. Take it from newlyweds Lira and Top Billing presenter, Ursula Stapelfeldt (now Mrs. Chikane), who kept hair short and natural for the big day. Keep hair natural and to spice it up, Nthato recommends adding some vibrant colour and texture to the hair. Try a dry scalp treatment like the one from the Motions collection which is very good at combating dandruff. I tend to apply it after washing to hydrate, soothe and condition the scalp. This prevents dandruff flakes and will leave your hair looking radiant and glossy. Because it feeds the scalp, it is great for a clean shaven head too, so even the groom can use it.”

Wedding style: The hairstyle will be complimented by a structured A-line dress that is minimalistic in detail and has strong lines to compliment the body. Make-up needs to be soft and subdued to give a natural, dewy look. The most important thing is to feel confident and comfortable in who you are and what your style is. “Don’t go too over the top and opt for a style that’s ‘so not you’. These memories, and photographs, will remain with you for many years to come. Keep it timeless yet trendy.” The best eternal style statement you can make is to be yourself – your partner will love you regardless of the hair.
