These beautiful little masterpieces are an inspiring showcase of the brilliant craftsmanship and innovation of community members that live and work in impoverished South African communities. These items are from the famous Uthando Project, a community of craftsmen and women from impoverished communities in South Africa, including Hout Bay, Bellville, Imizamo Yethu, Gugulethu and Langa. The Uthando initiative was startged by Michelle Cathrall to assist street crafters in taking their skills and products to a whole new level.
The Uthando project involves a variety of products, including beautiful costume jewellery pieces, bridal accessories and table décor items created by beaders, as well as wire and wooden items created by street crafters under the guidance of master florist and interior designer, Diddi Johnson. Creating a sustainable income is the reward for the creators of the products – a thought for each guest of the wedding when they take home their specially crafted little memento.
